Szomszédaink voltak - They were our Neighbours

A szentendrei zsidók mintegy két évszázados múltját bemutatni nem egyszerű feladat. Folytonos történet-e az övék az 1822-ből ismert legkorábbi említés óta? Vagy megszakadt 1944 nyarán, amikor az ország más részeihez hasonlóan helybeli „szomszédaik” közreműködésével összegyűjtötték, gettóba zárták, elhurcolták őket a haláltáborokba, és a „gazdátlanná vált” lakások, üzletek az azokat maguknak igénylő lakosoké lettek?

It is not easy to summarize some two centuries of Jews living in Szentendre. It is not easy to decide whether their story is uninterrupted since their earliest mention in 1822 – or whether the continuity breaks in the summer of 1944, when – like all over Hungary – local Jews were gathered to ghettos and deported to death camps, with the eager participation of their neighbors; their “abandoned” homes and businesses being taken over by anyone who made a claim to them.
